About Walkers of Trowell
For generations of anglers, Walkers of Trowell wasn’t just another tackle shop—it was a destination.
Established in 1971, the Nottinghamshire store quickly built a reputation as one of the UK’s premier independent tackle retailers. Situated between Nottingham and Derby, Walkers stocked everything from coarse, carp, game and sea fishing tackle to clothing, footwear and shooting equipment. At its peak, it was famous for its enormous range, knowledgeable staff and mail-order catalogue that reached anglers across the UK and beyond.
Back in the late 80s and 90s, a trip to Walkers was an experience. The shelves seemed endless, the bait fridges were always stocked, and if they didn’t have what you wanted, it probably hadn’t been invented yet. Their huge printed catalogues became almost legendary, and many anglers would spend hours flicking through them planning their next purchase. An advert from 1988 boasted over 700 rods on display, half a mile of shelving and a massive selection of carp tackle, with well-known carp angler Shaun Harrison helping to build the shop’s reputation in the specialist carp scene.
For countless Midlands anglers, Walkers was the place you visited before every big session.
What Happened to Walkers of Trowell?
After more than 50 years in business, Walkers of Trowell announced it would be closing during 2024, bringing an end to one of the country’s most recognisable independent tackle shops. The news came as a huge shock to anglers, with many describing it as the end of an era.
Like many long-established tackle retailers, Walkers had to contend with changing shopping habits, the rise of online retailers, increasing operating costs and shrinking margins. Although the shop had adapted over the years with a successful mail-order business and website, the retail landscape had changed dramatically from its heyday.
Interestingly, the building hasn’t disappeared from the angling world entirely. Planning applications submitted during 2024 and 2025 show continued work on the former tackle shop premises, including alterations to the shopfront.
While the doors may have closed, Walkers of Trowell remains one of those iconic names that many anglers will never forget. It was more than somewhere to buy tackle—it was part of British angling history.
