Spomb Review – Still the Best Bait Delivery Device?
If there’s one bit of kit that’s completely changed how carp anglers bait up, it’s the Spomb. Over the years plenty of companies have tried to improve on the concept, but I still think the original is the benchmark.
What makes it so good is just how well it casts. It’s incredibly aerodynamic, flies straight and, more importantly, lands accurately time after time. Whether you’re fishing at 50 yards or pushing the limits at range, it’s easy to keep your bait going into a tight area.
In my experience, the Spomb opens on impact around 9 out of 10 casts, which is more than reliable enough for most fishing. When it works as intended, all of your bait is deposited exactly where you want it with virtually no spillage during the cast.
I’m also a big fan of the latest version with the built-in float. I actually prefer it to the older design that relied on the detachable Spomb float. The newer model feels better in the air, is easier to retrieve and there’s one less accessory to lose or worry about.
The only real downside is the cost. At around £13 each, they’re not exactly cheap, and if you crack one off into the distance or lose it to a snag, it’s an expensive mistake.
Overall
Despite the price, the Spomb is still the best bait delivery system I’ve used. It’s accurate, reliable and has stood the test of time. If you regularly fish with a spod rod, it’s one of those bits of tackle that’s well worth having in your armoury.
