Good winter clothing probably catches more carp indirectly than half the tackle we spend money on.
If you’re cold, wet and miserable, you stop watching the lake.
You don’t move onto showing fish.
And eventually you go home.
Salopettes are particularly useful for carp fishing because they come higher up the body than normal trousers.
That eliminates the cold gap around your lower back every time you bend over to bait a rig or land a fish.
For winter use, look for:
- Waterproof outer material
- Insulation suitable for static fishing
- Adjustable shoulder straps
- Reinforced knees and seat
- Boot zips or wide lower legs
- Properly sealed seams
Brands such as Fortis, Trakker, Navitas and Fox all produce fishing-specific clothing.
But don’t overlook outdoor-work and mountaineering clothing either.
The most important thing is staying warm without becoming so bulky that moving around the swim becomes difficult.
Layering underneath good salopettes is better than relying on one enormous padded suit for everything.
What are the warmest salopettes you’ve used for winter carp fishing?
