Compact 9ft and 10ft carp rods have exploded in popularity, but the traditional 12ft carp rod is nowhere near obsolete.
For general UK carp fishing, I’d argue 12ft remains the safest all-round choice.
You get good casting leverage, plenty of line control and enough length to comfortably steer fish around marginal weed.
A 12ft rod around 3lb to 3.25lb test curve will cover an enormous range of venues.
You don’t automatically need 3.5lb test curves either.
A very powerful rod makes sense if you’re regularly using heavy leads, big PVA bags or casting extreme distances.
At 70 yards on a small pit, it may simply make playing carp less enjoyable.
Ring configuration is another consideration.
50mm butt rings remain popular for big-pit setups, although plenty of rods cast brilliantly with smaller guides.
Don’t become obsessed with one specification.
Blank quality and recovery matter more.
Brands including Free Spirit, Century, Daiwa, Shimano, Fox, Nash, Korda and Sonik all offer 12ft options across very different budgets.
