Solid PVA bags have caught an unbelievable number of carp over the years, and one of the biggest reasons they’re so effective isn’t just the neat pile of bait around the hookbait – it’s the way they allow a carp to approach from virtually any angle.
When you cast out a solid bag, everything is contained in a tight little package. Your hookbait, hooklink, lead and free offerings are all in one compact area. Once the bag melts, you’ve got a small dinner plate-sized patch of attraction with your hookbait sitting right in the middle.
The clever bit is the short hooklink.
Because there’s only a small amount of movement between the lead and the hook, the carp has enough freedom to comfortably suck the hookbait in whether it approaches from the left, right, front or behind. It doesn’t need to line itself up perfectly like it often does with a longer rig. As soon as it gets its mouth over the bait, the hook can follow naturally.
Then, as the carp lifts its head or moves away, that short amount of play disappears almost instantly and the full weight of the lead comes into effect. That’s when the hook is driven home.

A lot of anglers focus on the attraction of the pellets, crumb and liquids inside the bag, but the mechanics of the presentation are just as important. A solid bag creates a forgiving setup that lets the carp feed naturally while still giving the rig every opportunity to take hold.
