Fishing with mussels for carp

Carp eat far more than boilies.

On waters containing freshwater mussels, they can form an important part of the carp’s natural diet.

That’s why mussel-based flavours and extracts have appeared in carp bait for decades.

Actual mussel meat can also be incredibly attractive.

It’s soft, highly scented and completely different from the hard round baits carp encounter constantly.

The challenge is keeping it on the hook.

Fishing soft natural baits directly usually requires some creativity with mesh, elastic or combining them with a more durable hookbait.

Where legal, mussel meat can also be incorporated into spod mixes or groundbait.

But don’t start collecting freshwater mussels from the lake.

Some native species are protected, and removing wildlife from a fishery can also breach venue rules.

If you want to experiment, use responsibly sourced food-grade mussels instead.

Natural-food approaches are fascinating because you’re presenting carp with something much closer to what they’re biologically accustomed to eating.

Has anyone deliberately targeted carp using mussel as the hookbait?
