Venue of the week
Fish deaths
News has been filtering in about a number of carp deaths at various fisheries up and down the country. It's not unusual to get the odd carp dying from natural causes around spawning time but numbers this year seem abnormally high. One view is that this has been caused by exceptionally low water temperatures which have stopped the carp spawning in many venues and resulted in problems for some of these fish, sadly ending in mortalities.
Charity Carp Match
Eastleigh & District AC are holding a 24-hour Charity Carp match on the 25-26th August at Lakeside Country Park, Eastleigh. Their last even raised over £3,500 and this year they are hoping to increase this to more than £5,000 in aid of the Wessex Children's Hospice Trust (Naomi House) - Charity Registration No: 1002832. We understand that Ian Chillcott and Nick Helliuer are helping out and there will be a raffle/auction of donated prizes.
Charity fish-in
Another charity fish-in is to be held on Saturday 8th September to help raise funds for disabled people to go fishing.  It is being organised by Paddy’s Angling Disabled Support Group and is to be held at Monk Lakes, Staplehurst, Kent on Match Lake 1. Entry is £15 for adults and £10 for children under the age of 16. For more information contact Paddy on 0208 3118178.
Night with Dave Gawthorn
On Tuesday 11th September two-time British Carp Angling Champion Dave Gawthorn will be guest talker at a slide show evening at the Three Horseshoes Pub, Cardiff. The show will focus on Dave’s approach to carp fishing competitions, bait, baiting and rigs, and will no doubt come in handy to anglers who are participating in the Wales Carp Masters final that takes place two weeks later. To round-off the night, there will also be a mega raffle. For more information contact the event organiser Martin Cronin on 07974 053322.
Big fish round-up
Yateley Car Park Lake’s mighty Heather the Leather was landed at 47¼lb by venue regular Rick Harrison. We also hear that Ben Band has landed one of the most-sought-after fish in Bundy’s Pit, Cambridgeshire, in the shape of the Black Common at 42lb. Andy Clark has been in touch to report that he’s landed a personal best 49lb 6oz mirror from a South West syndicate water on Essential gear.
Lastly, we understand that the famous mirror known as Bernie’s Linear has been landed at 42lb from its Berkshire syndicate home.
Broadlands Lakes
Great results this week from a joint father and son effort - Dad Stephen Woolcombe and his 7-year-old son, from Emsworth, landed a 27lb 2oz carp using pineapple boilies at peg peg 113 on the main lake. At peg 86 Ollie Smith from St Albans landed four carp - a 20lb 6oz ghostie, 20lb 4oz common, a 20lb 2oz linear and an 18lb common. They were all caught on Club Mix.
Tackle shop on move
Midlands' tackle shop Rods & Reels are on the move, opening new premises in Hinckley, Leicestershire on 14th July. On 21st July they will be holding an official opening day with barbecue and representatives from tackle and bait companies. The shop will open at 9am and the official opening will take place at 12pm. Alan Parbery of Mistral Baits and Ray Dale-Smith of Carp ’R’ Us will be doing the official opening. For further information contact the shop on 01455 842450.
Angling MP
Reading West MP and keen angler, Martin Salter, who is the Labour Party Parliamentary Spokesman on angling matters has been appointed vice chair of the Labour Party by new Prime Minister Gordon Brown. Martin Salter said: “Concern for the environment is fast leaping up the political agenda and my job will be to coordinate the work of MPs, councillors and party activists with the work of ministers across the government on the environmental agenda. I will also be liaising with the green groups and voluntary organisations to engage them in the process of developing policy. My strong contacts in the world of angling, fisheries, water and wildlife groups will give me an excellent start in this new role. My immediate priorities will be to press for an enhanced Marine Bill to incorporate the Salmon and Freshwater Fisheries Review and possibly the recently announced proposals on improved public access to the English coastline. I also intend to explore ways in which young people can be better engaged in action to improve the environment and to promote awareness of climate change.”
Sparsholt College
The well-known fishery management college are holding another meeting for all those involved in coarse fish farming and fisheries on the 6th September 2007. A social event is planned for the evening of 5th September with a guided tour of the College’s fish facilities, followed by a barbecue. After the event, for those that wish to avoid the traffic there will be the opportunity to spend a couple of hours fishing the College coarse fishery or partake in a spot of clay pigeon shooting at the College clay site. The shooting will carry an additional cost and must be booked prior to the event so that numbers may be established.
Tickets will be £30 per person including a buffet lunch, refreshments throughout the day and a delegate pack detailing all the information from the talks. Big Carp - edited by Bob Church
The book is part of a successful series - others in the series from well-known book publisher Crowood feature tench, pike and barbel. The contributors in this book, Big Carp, were chosen by Bob Church. This 192-page, full colour hardback features Carp-Talk's very own Chris Ball (The Development of Carp Fishing), Tony Gibson (My Quest for Carp), Graham Kent (Mastering Difficult Carp Waters), Bob Church (At
last I go for Carp), and the irrepressible Des Taylor (...that's a good thing to say about someone Des). Des's chapter is titled Carping My Way (I can just picture Des singing " I Did It My Way' on the stage in his local!
Published by Crowood Press it is available from www.carptalk-shop.co.uk at a cost of £19.95 plus postage.
Ed Luxton has sent us this photo of his 'classic' carp - eligible because he caught it on 'classic' tackle. Trying out for the first time his late uncle's old rod, that he had restored at the cost of £96, Ed caught his 22-pounder from his local day ticket water, Parklands Carp Fishery at Upminster.
Nice one Ed - a Carp-Talk Top Catch badge is on its way to you

Richworth Linear - Oxlease Lake
The famous Linear complex in Oxfordshire is home to more than just one fantastic venue  (St Johns, Hardwick, Brasenose and Manor and all fantastic carp fisheries), but Oxlease is perhaps regarded as the best up and coming water. It is home to both mirrors and commons close to the 40lb mark as well as a carp stock in the region of 2000 fish! Good catches are taken all around the lake at all times of the year, and it’s not uncommon for visitors to experience ten or more fish in a day session. Small bags of pellets combined with yellow hookbaits work best but don’t ignore the maggots as these too work extremely well. It’s a good all-year-round water, so is definitely worth a trip in the harshest of conditions as well as in the red hot sun when they take floaters confidently.

Contact telephone: The head bailiff Roy Parsons on 07885327708
Website details: www.linear-fisheries.co.uk
Location: The venue can be found close to Oxford on the B4449 between Stanton Harcourt and the A415 Witney road. Click here for map and directions.
Ticket: £25 for three rods for 24-hours or £20 for three rods for 12-hours

Oxlease is about 26-acres and reports suggest there are about 25 carp that top 30lb, with several hundred over 20lb. Well worth a visit at any time of year.
16-year-old Lewis Vine with an Oxlease 35-pounder
In conjunction with Richworth Linear we are giving away a 48-hour ticket to fish Oxlease Lake. All you have to do to be in with a chance of winning is send us an email to competitions@carptalk-online.co.uk making the subject line Oxlease Lake 48 Hour Ticket. Please don’t forget to included your name and address. The closing date for the entries will be Mon 24th July so get your entries in, and the lucky winner will be chosen at random from entries received.

Hello and welcome to the third issue of our breakthrough Carp-Talk Xtra online magazine. This week we have the latest goings-on in the carp fishing world in our news section - and we have some of the latest catches from around the country that, when combined with Carp-Talk magazine, gives an unparalled weekly breakdown of what's being caught and who's catching them. If you think your catches warrant recognition then let us know and we'll do our best to get them in either Carp-Talk or Carp-Talk Xtra.
We have some reviews of top Aqua products, the latest freesprit Hi-‘S’ ive rods and some newly released products by Atomic. Carp-Talk Online is determined to bring you details of the latest product releases so you can give yourself an edge that using the latest innovations can sometimes provide.
We also have our usual Giveaways. Okay, they're not mega-competitions worth £1000's of pounds (not yet!) - but they are straightforward and free. There are no catches and they follow the general ethos of Carp-Talk Online itself. We don't offer a big wodge of prizes then try and get you to entry the competition using a premium rate phone line at £3 a chuck... and despite one or two cynics out there on the forums we definately have no plans to make this magazine subscription only in the future! By the way some of the items are now on seperate pages, so to find them you have to click on the links. We've done this to allow us to expand the magazine in the future.

Late news - death of big carp
We understand that a famous big common that was usually reported as being from a "private Nottinghamshire Lake", and recently reported in issue 666 of Carp-Talk is now dead. The fish was then caught by Richard 'Gadgett' Evans and was the lake record at 44lb 14oz. The fishery, which is actually called Church Pit, has lost in the region of seven carp.
