Carp-Talk magazine's latest recruit, 26-year-old Ben Wales continues his campaign on a tough northern venue. Earlier trips brought success with fish to 36lb-plus, but now it's gotten hard - not just for Ben but for the handful of regulars who manage to stick at it on this fishery. It's not just the bleak, open nature of the venue, or the vast amount Canadian pondweed - it's as much about just getting to the swims! A mega-walk is required that necessitates at least two trips (depending on how many 'comforts' you want to take with you. Still, you only get out of this game what you're prepared to put in - and the lake certianly has the capability to provide some truly outstanding northern carp fishing.

Well I hope you’ve all been out catching a few this week in amongst all the flood water. I’ve certainly seen plenty of fantastic catches reported to Carp-Talk, and most of the lakes local to me appear to be fishing their nuts off. Unfortunately my transport has been off the road all week and I’ve been chomping at the bit to get out there and have a go! Well I got the van back on Friday, so for the first time in two weeks I was able to get to work without sponging a lift.
When I got to work I was informed that one of the big ones was dead in a local lake called Brickyard. So I was quickly off up the road with Simon Crow to see which one it was. On arrival it was clear it was a common - about a mid twenty bloated up with spawn. I buried the fish near the car park after taking a few photos for identification purposes. It’s always a shame to lose any fish and especially on such a low stocked water as Brickyard.
I was out on the bike during the week keeping my eye on a couple of local waters and applying a bit of pre-bait, so hopefully by the time I get around to fishing these waters, they’ll be jumping into my net… I wish.
On Sunday I finished my 1st 4 Sports Level 1 Angling Coach course. After spending all week worrying about the course, once I got there it was all very straightforward and I really don’t know why I was worrying so much. I even managed to win a bag of groundbait in a fish biology quiz. Anybody want a bag of Sensas Noir?
I’m looking forward to being able to assist with the program of coaching days that Hull & District Anglers' Association are putting on this summer. Over a hundred youngsters will be given the opportunity to have a day out, fishing in beautiful surroundings, catching a few fish and we’ll hopefully create a few anglers for life.
I was on the Tilery Lake over the weekend and unfortunately it was another blank session. I was amongst good company though and Donny Steve kept me well entertained. I saw plenty of carp showing out in no man's land but it just was not to be. I’m keen to get amongst the big one’s again so I’m going to step up the baiting over the next two weeks. I’ll be doing a couple of overnighters this week. I don’t know where just yet but I’m tempted to go somewhere I’m likely to get a bend in the rod!
I’d also like to say massive well done to 'Lil' Steve for catching C Scale at 37lb 2oz from Fairview. What a stunning fish that is (pictured right). The full story of its capture appears in this week's Carp-Talk and I know you’ll agree it’s got to be one of the best looking fish in Yorkshire. I’ll definantly be having a drive out there in the very near future, it’s only 15 minutes from my house and surely well worth having a go.

British Airways Clubs Angling Society has recently changed its membership criteria to allow people who do not work for the airline to become associate members of BA Clubs. BACAS is best known for its specimen waters with two lakes producing carp to over 30lb - with the 90 acre Stockers Lake perhaps being the most famous with carp to over 40lb. The other is Whitney Lake, near Osterley Park. Further information regarding membership is available from ian.bathurst@ba.com or stephen.neck@ba.com. or by telephoning BA Clubs on 020 8513 2000. Ian Bathurst told Carp-Talk: “Basically it’s a two-tier membership, everybody must be a BA Club member, for this we would be proposing an individual following a informal interview. Once you are a BA Club member you are eligible to join the fishing section and away you go. BA Clubs fees are £60 whilst senior angling section fees are £36.”

Late availability! For those of you who haven’t got your finger out and booked your French trip this year yet, JLP Lakes  - who have just added 50 carp to Willow lake - have one week left on Willow this year! The week is 25th August and further info about it can be obtained by calling Lisa on 07710 523154. Incidentally, last week Willow saw three 50's and a 47lb common on the bank! Log onto: www.champagnecarping.com to have a look at the pictures.
For the more organised amongst you, JLP Lakes’ other venue, the successful La Fritterie - formally known as JRC No 1 - has only four weeks left for 2008 so get booking!

Carp-Talk contributors Sam Knight and Lee Pollard have recently been attending the PAA course at Pershore College to become level two certificated angling coaches, and we’re pleased to report that they both passed with flying colours. A smiling Lee told Carp-Talk: “We have both worked very hard and passed last Sunday. We would like to say a big thanks to our tutors Derek North and Richard Metcalfe for all their help and for getting us through it.”
Both are now available for bookings, and can be contacted at the following addresses: sk231280@hotmail.co.uk (Sam Knight) and carphaulinboy@aol.com (Lee Pollard).

Huge pike!
We know this ain't carpy because pike have got teeth, but one of our publisher's other magazines - Pike & Predators - has the full exclusive story of one of the biggest pike ever caught in the UK in its latest issue. And not just that but the captor has also caught pike of 34½lb and 41-12. How big was his biggie? Buy the mag to find out!

Stevenage angler
Neil Edge has caught a 46lb 5oz mirror from a Lee Valley water; and Rob Farrant caught a near 46-pounder from Fen Drayton - the last time this fish was caught was nine years ago! Read the full details of both captures in this week's Carp-Talk.

SVC (Spring Viraemia of Carp) has been confrmed at the Wilows, Hessay, about 4 miles north of York. The site comprises two lakes - both of which could be termed heavily-stocked 'match-type' fisheries based mainly on carp. The Goldrush lake's match record is 186lb and the smaller Ridge lake's record is 111lb. The site earlier in the year received a stocking of 8,000 additional carp and it does appear that this type of fishery is particularlt prone out outbreaks of SVC shortly after carp restocking. Samples were taken after a number of fish deaths and an Order was placed on the fishery stopping any further fish movements in or out of the site. As far as Carp-Talk is aware this is the only reported outbreak of SVC so far this year, although this may be related to the low water temperatures we have experienced.

An angler has been arrested over the death of swan at Saintbridge balancing pond, near Gloucester. It would appear from reports in local newspapers that an angler accidentally hooked a swan whilst fishing and it was later found dead. The swan was well-known to nearby local residents who had named it Cedric and an autopsy on the bird was being carried out. A 38-year-old man was arrested by Police after complaints, on suspicion of causing criminal damage under the Wildlife and Countryside Act.

Wyreside Fisheries have had a reward of £100 on offer for the past 15 years, fopr the first angler to catch a 40lb carp from their fishery. It's finally happened and the luvky angler who walked away with the cash was Manchester angler Mark Bodell. Full details in Carp-Talk.

Two-Tone, the famous Conningbrook mirror, has been caught a second time this year by Steve Mould, from Hove, at a weight of 65lb 4oz. Steve's full story and pictures will appear in next week's Carp-Talk.

Black Magic freezer boilies
Kingfisher Baits is a small bait company run by two keen anglers, who pride themselves on making top quality baits. The main bait in their range is Black Magic freezer boilies which was developed in 1997. It is a blend of sixteen different ingredients including fishmeal, vegetable/egg proteins, haemoglobin powder, bloodworm, bloodworm extract and other natural ingredients.
The bait is different to others that I have used and has accounted for many big UK carp (40lb 13oz) and foreign fish (49lb+). I can vouch for its effectiveness having caught my PB 30lb+ mirror from a water containing only two fish.
The high food value of the base mix combined with a complimentary package of liquid food ingredients produces an easily digestible, well-balanced nutritional year-round food source that has proven to be instantly acceptable to fish wherever it has been used. It has a subtle, yet distinctive smell and comes in a deep black colour giving the bait an additional edge. Black Magic contains no preservatives or flavours and has caught consistently over long term use (ten years on some lakes). If you are on the look out for a quality food bait this is one I can personally recommend.
The bait costs £7.50 a kilo (14m, 16mm and 18mm), with paste and pellets also available. Discounts are available on bulk orders and each order is sent out freshly rolled. Steve Jackson is also currently considering recruiting field-testers. For orders and information contact Steve Jackson on 07703331751 or kingfisherbaits@hotmail.com.

Carp Care Kit
No angler should call themselves an angler if they knowingly return a fish with visible mouth or body damage without doing something to help that fish. We all put hooks in fish and we all see fish on the bank that have been damaged through previous captures or by nature. The Carp Care Kit is a 'must-have item' for any angler and was designed by Thinking Anglers. As a result Korda have taken it on in their range to ensure that it is distributed into every anglers tackle box. It comes complete with two bottles (mouth and body). The ‘Mouth’ bottle covers any cuts or damage in that area with the ‘Body’ bottle proving essential to treat, sore, cuts and other visible damage.  This product really does work and should be promoted as an essential item in any anglers tackle box. With just a smear of treatment on any visible injury, you’re giving that fish the best possible chance of recovery. More details www.korda.co.uk

Korda Anti-Tangle Sleeves
It’s a known fact nowadays that stiffer hooklink materials such as coated braids and fluorocarbons are a lot more effective when they are lying straight on the lakebed, and away from the lead. Without using some sort of boom on the hooklink, tangles and looping of hooklinks are fairly common.
These newly-released Safe Zone Anti-Tangle Sleeves have been specially designed to reduce tangles, and also to push the hooklink away from the lead, making the hooklink lay out straighter.
They are made from a hardwearing material that will easily push over a size 8 Korda swivel, are finely tapered, and are easily trimmed for use with shorter hooklinks.
Available in weed, silt, gravel and clay colours to match different lakebeds, and available at all good tackle shops at a price of £2.99 for 25 sleeves. For more information contact Korda on 01708749775 or visit the website at www.korda.co.uk

Korda Rig Toolz
The Pulla is a clever little gadget that allows the angler to carefully pull knots tight, and also check that they are strong enough. The Pulla has a 2mm stainless steel hook securely moulded inside the handle that easily fits through swivel eyes. For checking knots, I’ve found it best to place a Pulla in the swivel and one on the hook, then pulling in opposite directions. The Pulla could also be used to steam shrink tubing safely.
Next up is a range of baiting needles that Korda have specially designed to cover every single requirement you’re ever going to need a baiting needle for. There are five needles altogether, these being: Fine - ideal for small baits such as corn. Heavy - ideal for all manner of baits. Splicing - made super strong for splicing Leadcore. Braid - designed so that braided fibres don’t get caught up in the needle. Stik - extra long needle designed for PVA sticks and stringers. With the exception of the braid needle, all the needles have a latch gate system.
Each of the needles has a soft-touch handle that has been specially colour coded to ensure easy retrieval from tackle boxes. Available at all good tackle shops at a price of £3.50 for the Pulla, with the baiting needles ranging from £1.99 to £3.50. For further information contact Korda on 01708 749775, alternatively, visit the website.

Trakker SL Bivvy
When Trakker decided there was enough demand to warrant the development of an all-round package, incorporating a bivvy and wrap, they decided to take it a step further. Not only does the final product include a bivvy in breathable fabric, a full extended winter wrap, groundsheet and ‘T’ pegs, you also get a full zip-in mozzy section. This mozzy panel can be used alone or with the normal front section. All this is incredible value for money with the 1-man retailing at £199.99 and the 2-man at £249.99.

Farlows Lake, Buckinghamshire
Owned by Boyer Leisure, Farlows Lake is located at Iver in Buckinghamshire. It’s a popular water which should be regarded as moderately easy. It has some lovely linears and mirrors to almost 40lb as well as commons over 30lb, and is certainly one of the most popular Colne Valley day ticket waters. It’s a great place to advance to if you’re used to fishing waters with very few features as it’s absolutely stuffed with bars, islands, bays, pads, you name it, it’s got it! Heron’s Point on-site also has the best facilities you can find at a day ticket water, including a tackle shop, car parking, showers, toilets as well as a café and a bar with full licensing hours.

Lake size: 25 acre main lake and a 5 acre match lake
Tickets: Day tickets are available on the bank and are priced at £17 for two rods for 24-hours or £20 for three rods for 24-hours
Further info: www.boyer.co.uk or telephone 01753 630302

My tip this week is to always follow the wind at this time of the year, regardless of what direction it comes from. In the winter months I favour sitting on the back of cold winds, but in the summer I’m a firm believer that whatever the direction, the carp will be on the end of it, especially if it’s a new wind. A good ripple will always oxygenate a water at this time of the year and I think this is what mainly attracts the fish to investigate.

Simon Crow

With all of the rain that the country has been hit with in the last few weeks, most of our lakes and waterways will have risen well above their normal levels. When this happens, you tend to get a lot of carp coming right into the margins to browse areas that they otherwise can’t get to. Here, they’ll find fresh food items and interesting features to keep them occupied. When conditions are like this, baits fished right in close can often tempt a fish or two, so don’t be afraid to try them right under your rod tips and in places that you might think a bit unusual, such as in the edge of a flooded swim or actually in the swim if there is enough water in it to cover the fish.

Ken Townley
What with this rain and humidity mosquito bites are a bigger pain than ever. Here are a few ideas on how to avoid being bitten or at least, to reduce the number and intensity of the bites.
1) Mozzies love clean bodies that smell nice, so forget shower gel, soap, hair gel, shampoo, deodorant, etc. It’s a bit gross I know but it’s best to go a bit on the whiffy side!
2) The photo shows the holy trinity of brewer’s yeast tablets, Skin-So-Soft (Avon) and an antihistamine called Apaisyl (sadly only available in Europe for some reason). Mozzies do not like the taste of blood that is carrying lots of B vitamins (brewer’s yeast). They detest the smell of the Avon product and if you do get bitten the Apaisyl prevents the bite turning septic and speeds the healing time by half.
3) This little gadget runs off my power pack. The No-Bite system does exactly what it says on the box. Absolutely brilliant. Available for most caravan and camping shops.
4) Keep them at bay outdoors by burning Citronella-impregnated amp oil in an oil lamp!

Ripples and Reflections by Len Arbery is the story of Len Arbery’s life as an angler. It recounts his humble beginnings at the local village pond, right through the years and waters, all the way to the rarified atmosphere at the most famous carp lake in the land, Redmire Pool, and the characters that enriched life along the way. The book is full of interesting and amusing anecdotes, with insights into the characters of several of the biggest names in angling that Len has fished with - Jack Hilton, Bill Quinlan, Bob Buteux, Fred J. Taylor. The book follows not just Len's fishing journeys but also his incursions into book collecting and antique cased fish.

The recent floods have had an impact for many  - for some they have been left devastated on a personal level; others have been affected in varying degrees. We came close at the Carp-Talk offices losing electricity for 13 hours and having pumps running for about 10 hours as the lake next to our office started to creep closer and closer to our doors! We know others who came off with much worse, such as Sam from Eric's Angling and Harry Peck from Bennets of Sheffield. We wish everyone affected a very speedy recovery.

Welcome to the second issue of Carp-Talk Xtra’s online magazine from the publishers of Carp-Talk. This week we have more news, catches and reviews - just like our launch issue. The first issue had a little bit of a delay. Unfortunately, BT had a nationwide problem with their mail servers, that lasted from about 10am till at least 11pm, so we couldn't send out Carp-Talk Xtra as planned. Nevertheless, we hope you liked it - we’ve had a few favourable comments so maybe we’re on the right track.
In this week’s issue we have new reviews on some of the latest Korda products and the new Trakker SLX Bivvy. We also have two sets of prizes to give away from BCUK and the Bait & Feed Company. Pick up some hot tips from the top anglers on the Carp-Talk team, Simon Crow, Ian Poole and Ken Townley. Also get some realistic info on our day ticket venue of the week.
Also check out the latest catches this week - none of the these actually appear in Carp-Talk magazine, and if you've had a good result lately don’t forget to send us your catch reports!
