Day Ticket

Day Ticket offers a light-hearted look into

everyday fishing with two all-round

anglers, Richard Garner and Trevor

Pritchard. As regular viewers of

Discovery Real Time fishing programmes,

Richard and Trevor both fancied

themselves as the next John Wilson and

Matt Hayes and entered a competition to

do just that. Using a home video of their

fishing antics as bait, they cast-off their

entry, and much to their astonishment, they

reeled in a series!
Day Ticket will see this natural double-act

embark on a range of dawn 'til dusk fishing

adventures. Armed only with humour, enthusiasm, a couple of rods and a day ticket, Richard and Trevor visit a variety of waters around the country, from their local haunts to popular fishing spots. From the early morning wake up call and deciding what equipment to take, to locating the best spots and trying out suitable techniques, this series captures the reality of their fishing days and highlights both the ups and the downs of their time spent at the waters edge.
The accessibility of the fishing venues was of key importance to Richard and Trevor. No syndicated lakes for them, but the very best of the day tickets and clubs available to tempt the weekend angler from the living room to the lake.
Day Ticket runs for approximately 125 minutes, and is available now from the
Carp-Talk Shop for £12.99 + £1.50 postage.

borwickfishing.co.uk stocking

Up in the North West, large carp of 30lb-plus are a very rare thing indeed. Borwickfishing.co.uk have a site at Lymm, Cheshire, that already contains carp that have grown over this magical weight, and on Friday 11th January the current stock was topped up with three additional carp to 37lb. The latest residents will make borwickfishing.co.uk one of the most popular day ticket fisheries in the North West. The largest carp introduced – a mirror weighing 37lb will make the lakes highly attractive. In addition to the big one there was also a common weighing 34lb and another mirror of 33lb. These additional fish raise the total of carp over 30lb in borwickfishing.co.uk to five. Day tickets cost £5 and a 24-hour session costs only £10. For further information regarding borwickfishing.co.uk you can visit their website at, you’ve guessed it, www.borwickfishing.co.uk or you can contact Jimmy on 07984 399637.

Post Office keeps rod licence contract

Rod licences will still be available

from every Post Office® in England

and Wales, following the Environment

Agency’s decision to renew the existing contract with Post Office Ltd until 2014.

"After a robust competition lasting nearly a year, we believe the Post Office offers the most cost-effective, accessible and efficient service available and is very good value for money," explained Environment Agency Head of Fisheries Dafydd Evans.

"The income from rod licences is vital to our work, whether it is maintaining and improving healthy fish stocks or increasing the number of people who go fishing. This new contract with Post Office Ltd means there will be more money to spend on fishing; something all anglers will be happy about."

The new contract starts in March 2009 and means Post Office Ltd will manage the sale of rod licences over the Post Office counter and over the telephone, and online via the Post Office website.

"We are delighted to renew this important contract which will allow anglers convenient access to rod licences via Post Office branches, a telephone line which we manage and, from 2009, our website," added Head of Government Services at Post Office Ltd, Kevin Seller.

"We want to retain and win as much business as we can to attract as many customers as possible, so that we can create a sustainable branch network. It is essential that we continue to be the access point for a range of Government services while we also successfully develop new competitively priced financial products and services."

The Cost of Angling

Have you ever considered what it costs you to go fishing each year? I’m not talking about your bait and tackle, I mean the actual fishing. You may be a member of a syndicate or an angling club, or you might go for the most expensive way of fishing and visit a day ticket water. Actually, visiting a day ticket water is not necessarily the most expensive way to partake in a little fishing. If you only go a few times a year then £30-£75/year might be the best way for you to angle. However if you go almost every weekend and fish for 24 hours at a premium day ticket venue you might be paying around £1200/year. For that sort of money you could be fishing one of the country’s more prolific syndicates. Okay, I appreciate you may have to wait a little while before you are offered a place, but if you’ve got your name on the waiting list – sooner or later your name will come up (unless you’ve upset somebody). So what about club waters? They are in my opinion, usually the cheapest option. Most clubs around the country have waters containing carp of specimen proportions and I think it’s fair to say a lot of people don’t want you to know exactly what the lakes contain, keeping the fantastic fishing for themselves. The price of a club book can cost between £25 and £200 but that will provide you with access to at least several waters and you can go as often as you like, in most cases you could actually live at the water’s edge for the full 12 months. Now that is cheap rent! Think of the money you could save by not having to pay all those bills and the mortgage. On second thoughts where would you register your address as being for your renewal form!

So now is the time to be looking around your local area (or possibly further afield) to find a potential jewel of a water. They are out there and thankfully there is something to suit everybody’s needs. But consider the overall cost, make sure you’re getting what you have paid for and could you be getting better value for money elsewhere.
